Patterns of glacial dispersal of heavy metals as reflected by satellite imagery
BELANGER, J R | RENCZ, A N | SHILTS, W W
Remote sensing and resources management; Congress, 1st, Montreal, Canada; Canada; Nov. 1977. pp. 59-74. 1979

The tonal discontinuities evident on unenhanced Landsat MSS images of vegetation overlying the known area of a heavy-metal glacial dispersal train are investigated. Samples of soils developed on the glacial deposits and of plants growing within and outside the dispersal train were analyzed for Ni, Cr, Co, Mg, Cu, Mn, Fe and Ca. Trace element concentrations in the plants are observed to follow those of the soil, with environmental factors determining the types of plant communities present in various regions. Data also indicate that high levels of nickel may act to reduce a plants ability to produce chlorophyll, as evidenced by the presence of scrub communities on soils highest in nickel.
